Fence painting in Harkaway

About fence painting

Acreage fences are a different exercise from suburban boundaries: hundreds of metres of timber, variable condition along the run, and exposure that punishes thin preparation. Done well, a finished boundary transforms the property; done cheaply, it peels within seasons.

We scope Harkaway fence work by walking the line and mapping its condition section by section. The free on-site quote reflects the measured reality — including which runs are worth coating and which need a fencing contractor first.

What the job involves

Long runs, staged sensibly

Long boundaries are staged so the finish stays consistent: preparation equipment moves along the line once, then coating follows in the same sequence. Condition varies along rural runs, so preparation intensity varies with it — sound sections get a clean and recoat, tired sections get the full treatment.

Gates, entry structures and posts carry more than their share of weather and wear, so they get particular attention. On properties with stock or pets, we plan gate management and work zones with you at the quote.

Every fence surface is different

Weathered timber palings, previously painted fences, stained timber and metal fencing each need a different preparation path. Greyed timber is cleaned and sanded so coatings can grip; failing paint is scraped back to sound edges; metal is washed, de-rusted where needed and primed with a compatible product.

Posts, rails, gates and capping are part of the job, not extras. A fence is only as tidy as its framework, so the scope covers the whole structure — and if a paling or post is beyond a recoat, we tell you at the quote rather than painting over it.

Boundaries and access

Fences sit on boundaries, which brings practical questions: which side are we painting, is there access along the line, and are there neighbours, retaining walls, gardens or pools to work around? We walk the fence line during the quote and plan the access before starting.

Where a fence is shared, most owners organise their own side. We're happy to quote one side or both, and to keep the scope clear about exactly which line and which faces are included.

Choosing the finish

Colour and opacity set the tone of the whole yard. A solid colour hides weathering completely and pairs with the house palette; a semi-transparent stain lets the grain show and weathers more gently. Lighter colours can make a small garden feel bigger, while dark tones make greenery stand out.

Exposure matters too — fences in full sun, under sprinklers or beside pools need finishes chosen for those conditions. We talk through options at the quote and name the finish in your written scope.

Local knowledge

Rural exposure, honest boundaries

Open-country exposure is the defining condition: full sun, wind and rain with nothing to soften them. Coatings and preparation are selected for that, and we are upfront that exposed rural fences need attention more often than sheltered suburban ones.

We also draw the line honestly between painting and fencing. Timber that is broken, missing or rotten needs a fencing contractor; coating cannot fix structure. Where that applies, we will say so at the quote and can proceed on the sound sections.
