Cost guide

Every painting job is priced on its own size, condition and access, so the most accurate answer is a free on-site quote. Here's what we look at when we price your job.

Last updated 31 October 2026

01

Size

The total area of walls, ceilings, roof, deck or fence is the biggest driver. More area means more paint and more time.

02

Condition

Surfaces in good shape need less work. Peeling paint, mould, grey timber or chalky roofs take longer to bring back.

03

Preparation

Washing, scraping, sanding, filling and priming are where a lasting finish comes from, and they often take as long as the painting itself.

04

Access

Steep blocks, tight side paths, stairwells and furniture-filled rooms all affect how efficiently we can work.

05

Number of coats

Most jobs are two finish coats. Big colour changes, new plaster or porous surfaces may need a sealer or extra coat.

06

Paint quality

Premium products cost more upfront but typically cover better and last longer. We'll explain the options.

07

Height

Second storeys, high ceilings and roofs need ladders, scaffolding or safety equipment, which adds time.

08

Repairs

Cracked plaster, rotten timber or broken roof tiles may need fixing first, sometimes by another trade.

Why we quote on site

Photos and measurements help, but they can hide things like soft timber, failing coatings or tricky access. Visiting in person lets us price the job you actually have and put every inclusion in a written scope.

Comparing quotes

When comparing painters, check that each quote lists the same surfaces, preparation steps, products and number of coats. A cheaper quote often leaves out preparation, which is what makes paint last.
