Fence painting in Hallam

About fence painting

In Hallam's established streets, the fence is the backdrop to the whole backyard: visible from the living areas, the deck and the driveway. Greyed palings and flaking paint drag everything down; a clean, even fence line lifts all of it.

We paint and stain Hallam fences — timber palings, posts, gates and suitable metal fencing. The free on-site quote walks the boundary, checks the condition of every run and sets out the preparation and finish in writing.

What the job involves

Backdrops that get proper preparation

A fence is only as good as its preparation. Grime and mould are washed out, rough palings are sanded, failing old coating is scraped back and bare patches primed — then the finish goes on evenly over palings, posts, rails and gates.

Close quarters matter here: fences run close to neighbouring yards, sheds and garden beds. We protect what surrounds the line, work tidily in tight spaces and finish the edges where fence meets fence, path and garden as cleanly as the faces.

Every fence surface is different

Weathered timber palings, previously painted fences, stained timber and metal fencing each need a different preparation path. Greyed timber is cleaned and sanded so coatings can grip; failing paint is scraped back to sound edges; metal is washed, de-rusted where needed and primed with a compatible product.

Posts, rails, gates and capping are part of the job, not extras. A fence is only as tidy as its framework, so the scope covers the whole structure — and if a paling or post is beyond a recoat, we tell you at the quote rather than painting over it.

Boundaries and access

Fences sit on boundaries, which brings practical questions: which side are we painting, is there access along the line, and are there neighbours, retaining walls, gardens or pools to work around? We walk the fence line during the quote and plan the access before starting.

Where a fence is shared, most owners organise their own side. We're happy to quote one side or both, and to keep the scope clear about exactly which line and which faces are included.

Choosing the finish

Colour and opacity set the tone of the whole yard. A solid colour hides weathering completely and pairs with the house palette; a semi-transparent stain lets the grain show and weathers more gently. Lighter colours can make a small garden feel bigger, while dark tones make greenery stand out.

Exposure matters too — fences in full sun, under sprinklers or beside pools need finishes chosen for those conditions. We talk through options at the quote and name the finish in your written scope.

Local knowledge

Established boundaries, mixed materials

Hallam's established blocks mean fences of several eras and materials — old hardwood palings, newer treated pine, Colourbond-style metal and the occasional brick-and-timber combination. Each takes a different preparation path, which the on-site assessment sorts out.

Proximity to busier roads in parts of the suburb also means grime builds faster on street-facing fences. Those runs get a more thorough wash-down — coating over road grime is another classic shortcut that fails early.
